What DPI to Scan At — and Why It's Higher Than for Prints
DPI (dots per inch) decides how much detail you capture. With paper prints you can scan at 300 to 600 DPI because the original is already a normal size. Slides and negatives are different: a 35mm frame is barely an inch wide, so you are enlarging a tiny original. To get a picture big enough to print or look good full-screen, you have to scan at a much higher DPI.
A print is already the size you want. A slide is a postage stamp you need to blow up to poster size — so it needs far more resolution to survive the enlargement.
A simple rule of thumb for 35mm film: scan at 2000 DPI if the images will only ever live on screens, and 3000 to 4000 DPI if you want to print them or keep an archival master you might enlarge later. Going much higher than 4000 mostly adds file size, not real detail. Save as TIFF for masters if you have the space, or high-quality JPEG for everyday use.
